|  | What Has Happened Thus Far?

Just a little something to help new members become aquainted with what's happened rather than read through all the plot threads.
On Gaia:
Sephiroth, Angeal, and Genesis were ordered to go into the Mist to find out and eliminate the source of the problem, and bring back samples if possible. They found strange creatures that were similar to humanoid canines made of a pure black semi-liquid. As they fought them, they learned that these shadow creatures were weak against fire.
Soon they found a far more formidable enemy: a very humanoid version of those previous shadows, standing as tall as the large Mist, which is far taller than the city of Midgar itself. It, however, was not such a hard task to defeat it with their teamwork, and managed to take the creature down unscathed.
As the creature melted into the ground, the Mist disappeared from around the city, and Genesis mysteriously collapsed in pain. He returned to Midgar while Sephiroth and Angeal scouted the rest of the perimeter of the city.
Hojo received sample of the shadow creatures, and found that it is a mutated form of the Jenova cells injected into the SOLDIERs. He then gathered a subject, Kazuma, and injected him with it. It seemed to only put him through intense pain for hours, making Hojo ready to mark him a failure, but before he could, Kazuma seemed to recover from the pain and reported that he felt like all of his senses were heightened, magnified twice over what they were like beforehand.
Next, Hojo injects the last of his sample into someone not exposed to the Jenova cells. This grunt, Darius, transforms completely into a larger, more humanoid form of the shadow creatures, and tears the assistant who injected him apart with the sharp teeth and claws that he grew. Hojo is elated at this result, and tranqs Darius until he finally goes unconscious.
Shinra needs to move on and focus on their problems before the Mist: Wutai. Genesis, thanks to Sephiroth, is chosen to lead a group of Second Class SOLDIERs into Wutai and force a surrender by the Emperor. Unfortunately, Hollander will not allow it, as he induces a transformation in Genesis and an uncontrollable rage that leads him to kill every last SOLDIER he came with, except for a bumbling young teen named Art, who instead got caught by Wutainese troops for interrogation.
Genesis is now labeled MIA as well as the rest of the men who "disappeared" with him, while Shinra prepares to investigate this issue, while also re-launching an invasion that Genesis couldn't seem to complete.
Second Class SOLDIER Zack Fair is sent on the mission to Wutai, to force a surrender while other officials investigate the Genesis issue. He is accompanied by other Second Class, and his mentor Angeal Hewley.
Unfortunately, their mission barely has a chance to begin, as the first group never seemed to make it through to give the signal to go. Angeal sends Zack anyway, to find platoons of Wutainese soldiers waiting at the gate, along with a couple other SOLDIERs being held captive.
Angeal "comes to the rescue", and ends up hearing out the Wutai for what they want. They make a proposal that they will keep quiet about the Genesis incident if Shinra never comes back to Wutai again. After demanding to hear about Genesis, Angeal hastily agrees and disappears, handing the tortured SOLDIER to Zack first of course.
Zack returns to the rendezvous point, along the way running into an enemy that looked exactly like Genesis. It was obvious something was wrong, but he was ordered back to Midgar immediately after meeting with Director Lazard and Sephiroth to tell them what happened.
In Spira:
A new summoner named Avalyn has blossomed from Kilika after the majority of the village is destroyed by an attack by Sin. She is now beginning her pilgrimage after the next boat from Besaid arrives and takes her and her guardian, Jansen, back to the small island south of Kilika.
